I got a Radio Shack stereo for my birthday when I was a freshman in high school and the first 2 albums I bought were John Prine and Deep Purple Machine Head.

I was born (and grew up) on the other side of the world almost 2 decades after John Prine hit the big stage, so I didn’t discover him until about 8 years ago - through a modern artist, Justin Townes Earle’s version of Unwed Fathers.

In general I’ve been really stressed out about this virus mainly in a generalized sense about its impact on so many unknown innocent people. Seeing this news about him passing really hit me hard in an unexpected way.

I had a 7am meeting that I woke up earlier than usual for that once I dialed in was told they don’t need me there for (thanks, guys!) so I’ve just been sitting here that time listening to his music. I know he’s had health issues for a while now but this is still a shitty shock.

Just found his Tiny Music session from 2018 - his new music is as good as his old, and his voice as amazing as ever. More than anything his humor and good spirit between songs is so beautiful.

As with so many with this shitty ass virus I just hope he -a person who brought meaning and solace through his music to so many - didn’t have to die alone. Fuck this shit.

I’ not crying, you’re crying.
